Even though we intended to carry onwards to the Altyn Emel, we couldn’t be bothered to drive another distance. Simultaneously, we found out about the Norwegians being in Almaty as well and felt it was time to convoy with them from here on.
We took what was described as a 5 minute walk (but rather equalled an hour) to the local mall, enjoying airconditioning, junkfood, and coffee amidst the blistering heat outside.
Soon after we couldn’t shake the tiredness off our shoulders and moved forwards to get a room at the same hostel as the Norwegians. Settling there for an incredible price we took rest. In the evening we saw our Norwegian friends, and got a table at the restaurant nextdoor. Suddenly I received a message from an Italian friend from Milan who is also doing the Mongol rally, who by coincidence happened to be in Almaty too! They joined us and we spent an evening drinking, laughing and talking – telling stories of our trip thus far.
